WIND TURBINE DEMOLITION – FOUNDATION AND BLADES CUT WITH DIAMOND WIRE SAW

Thousands of wind turbines installed 10-15 years ago are now reaching end-of-life. The largest blades exceed 100 meters and foundations weigh over 140 tons.

Decommissioning cost depends on how many turbines are dismantled at once: dismantling a single turbine is significantly more expensive than joint demolition of multiple turbines, because transport and setup of crane equipment is the single largest cost item.

We cut foundations and blades vibration-free with diamond wire. Request a quote – we give an exact price estimate based on your site.

    01 – FOUNDATIONS – 7x7M, 140 TONS

Reinforced concrete foundation, heavily reinforced. Cannot be blasted or hammered near settlements. We saw it vibration-free with diamond wire: 1-2 days per foundation. No vibration limits exceeded, zero overbreak, works underwater and in confined spaces.

CRITICAL: NOT JUST CONCRETE. Each foundation contains 36-40 post-tensioned rock anchor bundles (Dywidag 0.6″ / 1860 MPa steel). Each bundle = 8-15 cables tensioned to 100-200 tons and grouted 15-30m deep into bedrock. Cutting releases enormous energy – lethal if done wrong. Conventional tools melt. Diamond wire cuts concrete + hardened steel in one cold, water-cooled pass, releasing tension bundle by bundle, controlled.

    02 – BLADES – 80M, CUT INTO 3 PIECES

Blade length is 40-107m depending on turbine size. Largest blades are longer than a Boeing 747 wing. Transport as one piece is impossible. Material: 50-80 layers of fiberglass + epoxy + balsa + carbon fiber. Root thickness 3-4m. Landfill is banned in Europe. Blades are cut into panels and ground into powder for reuse.

    WHY FREE DEMOLITION FAILS

Free demolition teams want scrap metal. They cannot cut post-tensioned 1860 MPa cables. When tension releases uncontrollably, wire snaps, foundation shifts and saw jams. No insurance covers this. We are specialized for pre-stressed foundations.

    WHY DIAMOND WIRE SAWING?
    – Vibration-free – does not exceed limits in residential areas
    – Precise geometry – zero overbreak
    – Cold cut, spark-free – also for offshore and gas
    – Low noise and dust-free – water-cooled, binds toxic fiberglass
    – Works in confined spaces and underwater
    – Cuts 1860 MPa hardened steel + concrete – in one pass

FAQ – WIND TURBINE BLADE CUTTING

Why can’t wind turbine blades be cut with an angle grinder?

Because blade is under enormous tension. 40-107m long pre-stressed structure designed to withstand storms. When you cut it with angle grinder or shear, tension releases uncontrollably – blade can strike, jump or break unpredictably. Working next to cutter is life-threatening. Grinder melts shut after 1 meter – fiberglass dust is toxic (lung cancer risk) and sparks ignite epoxy. Blade jams when cut incorrectly and falling piece is dangerous. Wire saw cuts cold, water-cooled, in 30 minutes without sparks, dust and vibration – safely from distance.

Why are wind turbine blades cut with wire?

Blade is not metal. It is 50-80 layers of fiberglass + epoxy + balsa + carbon fiber. Grinder blade melts and burns out in 1 meter. Diamond wire cuts whole length with water cooling.

Is cutting a wind turbine blade toxic?

Yes. Blade fiberglass dust is highly toxic and causes cancer (EU Carc. 2). When cutting with angle grinder, fine dust floats for hours and goes into lungs. Without full protective suit work is life-threatening. When cutting with diamond wire, water binds all toxic fiberglass particles. No dust. 0% airborne dust. Only safe method near settlements.

Why is wind turbine foundation cutting dangerous?

Foundation contains 36-40 post-tensioned rock anchor bundles (1860 MPa high-tensile steel). Each bundle is under 100-200 ton tension and grouted 15-30m deep into bedrock. If cut incorrectly, tension releases like a gunshot – cable whips through concrete. This is why hammers and blasting are banned near settlements. Diamond wire is the only method that cuts steel and concrete cold and releases tension bundle by bundle under water cooling.

How long does demolition of one turbine take?

Foundation 1-2 days incl. 1860 MPa cables. Blades 1 day (3 blades x 3 cuts).
